Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: Ideas for Your Old Pillowcases

When replacing your worn-out household linens, do you wonder what to do with your old ones? Most just throw them out, but why not repurpose your old pillowcases into something that can serve a different purpose. There are a lot of ways you can reuse old pillowcases around your Staunton rental home. Be inspired by the ideas below and get creative yourself!

Floor cushion. Pillowcases make comfortable floor pillows or chairs! Simply sew three or four pillowcases together along the long edges, stuff with pillows or other filler, and sew closed. Use these cushions for your next sleepovers or use them in your game room or reading nook.

Dog bed. Make your dog bed look extra nice with a cover made of old pillowcases! Dog beds can start to look torn up over time. By using your old pillowcases, you can make a cover for an existing dog bed that you can remove and wash. Alternatively, you can use new stuffing and make an entirely new dog bed out of that old pillowcase. These tips will save you some money!

Apron. Older linens have cute patterns that make cute wearables, like an apron. Being both fun and functional, the fabric of a pillowcase can be cut and sewn into a cute apron you can use again and again. Since aprons come in different sizes and styles, you can customize them to suit your personal style.

Laundry bag. Because of their shape, pillowcases are easily repurposed into a variety of creative uses. In fact, just by adding a drawstring around the top opening, you can convert any old pillowcase into a laundry bag. You’ll just need to fold the top edge over, sew, and then thread a cord through. This pillowcase laundry bag is perfect for traveling or for small spaces.

Reusable shopping bag. For a few extra minutes, you can also repurpose that old pillowcase into a reusable shopping bag. There will be a bit more cutting and sewing involved to make the handles, but it should be no problem for someone who knows how to use a needle.

Chair Covers. Another creative idea is to reuse old pillowcases as decorative chair covers for your home. A set of vintage or decorative pillowcases with a pretty pattern would be perfect for this. Simply slip them over the backs of chairs to transform your room. Tie a ribbon or cord around the chair back to secure the covers in place and you’re good to go.

Book tote. You can also make that old pillowcase into a book tote. In just a few hours, you can make an easy book tote. You just need to cut strips off the top of the pillowcase and turn them into handles, then sew them on. Your fun and the functional tote are now ready to tag along with you anywhere you go.

Dress or cute top. Finally, what could be sweeter than a favorite pillowcase turned into a child’s dress or summer top? There are a lot of easy patterns to craft a simple dress, skirt, or top you can wear during the warm summer days.
